What is the right age to start taking collagen?

12 April, 2023

This is probably one of the most common questions that we receive in our mailbox!

And, quite frankly, there isn’t a right or wrong answer to this one. The answer, despite what you might read, isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ answer.

But, we what do know, is the ‘science-y’ bit; the facts that can help you decide when it might be a good time to start supplementing your diet with collagen.

So let’s take a look at what we do know…

Our body’s own natural collagen levels start to decrease when we’re in our mid-20s. This decline is relatively steady to begin with. However, we also know that the rate at which our body produces collagen decelerates as we age, and from the age of around 50 this happens even more so. By the time we are in our 60s and 70s, our own natural collagen levels will be at their lowest. In fact, by the age of 60 we will have lost approximately 80% of our own natural collagen. And by this age, most people will have already noticed the visible (and invisible) signs of ageing, and for many this can start to become apparent in our 30s.

Here are some ‘watchouts’ that might indicate that your body’s collagen levels are depleting:

  • fine lines, creases and wrinkles forming in your skin. This can be in any area, however most commonly this is around the eyes, around the mouth, across the forehead, and across the upper chest area
  • your skin might start to appear duller, less hydrated, thinner and maybe even ‘crepey’
  • your hair can start to thin, break, fall out and appear dull and lifeless
  • your nails might become brittle, flaky and dry
  • your joints may start to become achey, sore and tender… even when you have not have done anything particularly strenuous

Taking a high quality collagen supplement can be a complete ‘game-changer’ for our body. Firstly, it can actually encourage your body to ‘kick start’ its own collagen production ‘engines’. Collagen is arguably the most important of the body’s proteins. It is responsible for maintaining skin elasticity, bone and cartilage strength and the efficacy of connective tissues in and around the joints, so it is a key element (not only for aesthetic purposes) in ensuring the integrity of so many functions within our body.

So, when is the right time to start taking a collagen supplement?

It is arguably never too early to ensure that declining collagen levels are addressed! Many people in their early / mid 20s start taking a collagen supplement in order to prevent or delay the onset of ‘ageing’. By taking a collagen supplement, as your body’s own natural collagen production begins its decline, you can prevent some of the early signs of ageing, and for some this has been an imperative part of their ‘health maintenance routine’. In fact, some of our customers take DermaShotz daily in their late teens / early 20s for the benefits that collagen has in the management and treatment of acne prone skin and skin recovery following acne ‘flare ups’. Conversely, many of our customers have reported incredible results in the improvement of their skin, hair, nail and joint health after starting to take DermaShotz daily in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s!

In short, it’s never too early (or in fact too late!) to start taking a collagen supplement to improve the levels of one of your body’s most integral proteins!
